Future Workshops

Electrical Circuits and Home Wiring

Ages 10 to 17    10:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.    Renton Fairwood area

In this workshop basic electrical concepts will be covered including Voltage, Resistance and Current and Ohms law. We will build battery power circuits to experience what a circuit needs to operate, what Ohms law means and how to make voltage, resistance and current measurements in our circuit. Safety is always stressed and your child will not be exposed to dangerious voltages in this class.  A large portion of the class will be installing household outlets, switch's and lights on a full size practice wall. This will be exactally like what would be seen in new construction or additions to a house.  They will drill holes, pull wires in and secure them before they make conections to switch's outlets and lights.  If time allows we will do a three-way light switch circuit on the same test wall.   FOR REAL!!!

Home Repair

Ages 10 to 17    10:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.    Renton Fairwood area

Plumbing will include installing new copper water supply pipe and ABS drain lines to a full size practice wall. Students will then install a faucets with hoses and drain P trap on a sink attached to the wall. As always safety is stressed and appropriate safety gear is available for use. We will also practice pounding nails and experience what it is like being on a roof, with the safety of being close to the ground. Students will install three tab roofing including flashings and vents.  Yes, your child installing a roof (within four feet of the ground! )  We will also work with fall restriant so your child can experience how it feels to wear this gear and have a basic idea how to use it.  FOR REAL!!!

Car Maintenance

Ages 10 to 17    10:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.    Renton Fairwood area

Students will do an oil change and learn how to properly dispose of the waste oil and filter. All fluids will be checked including radiator antifreeze, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, differential oil, washer fluid, brake fluid,  Battery removal and replacement along with battery terminal cleaning will be done, air filters will also be changed. As always safety is highly stressed and appropriate safety equipment will be used at all times. Students will change a tire and get instruction on how to properly support a vehicle while working on it. There will also be a demonstration on how to inspect and replace front brake pads on real cars. FOR REAL!!!

Model Rocketry  Tuesday!   $95.00 including 2 rockets

Ages 10 to 17    10:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.  Renton Fairwood area

This class is great fun and very exciting. Each student will build two model rockets that are theirs to keep, then we will go launch each of them three times if possible. We will be building two 12" tall rockets with streamer recovery systems. The Estes Viking rocket has 48 possible fins configurations so that the affects of these choices on stability and aerodynamics choices can be  seen when they fly. The Estes Wizard can reach 1600 feet in a few seconds! That's almost out of sight!!!!  We will start with lower power motors to insure safe flight characteristics, then the biggest motor the rockets can handle will be used.

A NOTE TO THE PARENTS - The two model rockets your child builds will be theirs to take home, However there is always the possibility that a model rocket will be lost or damaged during flight. We have had some go so fast that they are never seen again!  The class will also be traveling about 3 miles each way to the park for the launch. It is important  to outfit your child for the weather expected that day. A rainy or windy day will make make the launches more challenging and umbrellas would be helpful.

Digital Electronics

Ages 10 to 17    10:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.    Renton Fairwood area

In this workshop Digital logic with direct application to logic gates and circuit construction is covered. Students will be able to design and build simple digital circuits at the end of this class!!!  FOR REAL!!!!  (These circuits run on very low voltage so there is no danger to you or your children) We will construct a digital logic probe that will tell us the state of logic level that your youth will get to take home with them!!  FOR REAL!!! The circuits will be built using CMOS AND, OR, NOT gates, counters and a 555 timer so we can make changes happen in our circuits. Very cool!  Some soldering on the logic probe will be done and the other construction will be done on breadboards.

Small Motor Repair   In this workshop students will learn how to inspect, maintain, and repair lawn mower engines!!!  By the end of this class they should be able to decide if a garage sale mower is worth the $5.00 price and be able to get it running when they get it home!!  FOR REAL!!!  Multiple lawn mowers will be available to work on, each with several problems to solve. Students will gain knowledge of how an engine runs, what to do to get them running and how to keep them running. A cut away motor will also be available to help students understand the internal workings of an engine.

Excel     In this workshop basic spread sheet construction, manipulation, and accenting will be taught. Students will create graphs using data in spreadsheets with labels, background and trend lines will also be covered.

Advanced Metal Working   Students will learn to MIG and stick weld!!!  FOR REAL!!!  This class will also include cutting torch setup and hands on operation. ( instructor permission is required)
